BCAAs – The Stairway to Success

A key component to me winning the coveted title of Mr. America and my clients achieving fantastic results was the incorporation of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) as a nutritional supplement. Just to follow up from my last article, "Nutrition: the S.M.A.R.T. way", BCAAs are VITAL if you are looking to transform your BODY into a FORTRESS.

BCAAs – Who we are and what we do

Some of you may or may not know, but approximately 22 different types of amino acids are used in the body and each have a different mission. BCAAs are a source of nitrogen for various functions within muscle.* From my own experience as well as the experiences of my clients, BCAAs taken before and after workouts are DEMANDED if you are seeking maximum results.

Protein provides the building blocks that are necessary for the repair and of muscle after a workout, no matter how intense. The 9 essential amino acids that the body cannot make for itself and are consumed through your diet are:

Essential:

Histidine
Isoleucine
Leucine
Lysine
Methionine
Phenylalanine
Threonine
Tryptophan
Valine

Giving your body these essential amino acids during or after a workout will support recovery.* Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine are three BCAA's, and each one is an essential amino acid. They also act as fuel for the body.

The Non-essential (Don't be misled, we still need these to support our metabolism):

Non Essential:

Alanine
Argine
Aspartic Acid
Cysteine
Cystine
Glutamic Acid
Glutamine
Glycine
Hydroxyproline
Proline
Serine
Tyrosine
