Q + A with Korbie Nitiforo◊
You come from a very athletically gifted family. Give the Body Fortress fans a little insight into what it was like growing up and what role sports played in your childhood.
I grew up with 4 brothers; 2 older and 2 younger. We were all very athletic as kids and always amongst the fastest and strongest in school. Also, my dad ran in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and got me started in track & field at an early age. I excelled at the shot put and the long jump. Then in high school I went on to do well in many other sports as well.
How and when did you start to become interested in bodybuilding?
My oldest brother Frank was into bodybuilding and used to collect some of the old bodybuilding magazines. My younger brother Jojo and I would always sneak and read them whenever we got a chance. When I got older, Frank bought us a weight set for Christmas and from that point on my brother Jojo and I worked out every day after school until we graduated.
Were there any professional bodybuilders you admired when you were younger?
I always admired Lee Haney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They were taller bodybuilders and I could relate more to their physiques.
A lot of people think bodybuilding is all about lifting heavy weight and often overlook the important of nutrition and rest. Explain how taking care of your body outside of the gym is vital to achieving the desired result.
Most people look at me and think that I must train every day for 2 hours a day. They are completely shocked when I tell them I only train for about an hour a day 4 days a week. The key is to remember; when you're in the gym working out, you're actually breaking down muscle. Your muscles only recover and grow when you give them the proper nutrition and rest outside of the gym.
What first inspired you to pursue a career as a Personal Trainer?
When I graduated High School, I got a job working behind the front desk at a local gym. I noticed that many of the members would come up to me while I was working to ask questions about their form or if they were doing an exercise properly. We had personal trainers on site, but for whatever reason the members came to me for answers. That is when I realized that I enjoyed helping people and that I might be a good personal trainer.
What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment within the fitness industry to date?
I would say my greatest accomplishment within the fitness industry to date is getting discovered by Body Fortress. It's been a blessing to get the opportunity to endorse products which I actually use and to see my picture in the pages of Flex magazine is a dream come true.
When can Body Fortress fans expect you to take the stage and compete in 2014?
Body Fortress fans can expect to see me on stage in 2014 at the Masters Nationals in July.
Describe a typical day in the life of Korbie Nitiforo.
A typical day in the life would go something like this: Get up at 4am and get ready for work. Open the gym for clients at 5am and eat breakfast at 6am. Do some more work and eat another meal at 9am. Finish working and close the gym by 11am. Eat lunch at 12noon and between noon and 4pm I'll usually run errands, do a workout, or answer some emails. Eat again at about 3pm and open the gym for clients at 4pm. Work until 7pm and then close the gym. Eat dinner at 7pm and then relax and watch a movie or read a book. Eat once more at 10pm, then it’s time to relax and get ready for bed.
How do Body Fortress® products help you maximize your training?
Body Fortress products help me maximize my training by improving my recovery time between workouts. As I touched on earlier in this interview, recovery is everything in this sport. If your muscles can't recover, they can't grow bigger and stronger. And that's what bodybuilding is about, building bigger, stronger muscles. I would recommend the Body Fortress line of products to anyone that is serious about working out and taking their physique to the next level.
